JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Eli Manning is a lot like Blake Bortles in one critical area: They’re both turnover machines.

Both average 1.3 per game. From 2004 to ’16, Manning averaged 16.5 interceptions per season. Bortles averaged 17 per season in his first three seasons. Manning led the NFL in interceptions three times — including throwing 27 in 2013 — and Bortles led the league with 18 in 2015. The turnovers drove Tom Coughlin nuts when he was with the New York Giants, and they’re driving him crazy this year, too.

That was Coughlin’s No. 1 priority with Bortles this season: Cut down on the turnovers. He has, slightly. He has 11 in 11 games and is on pace for a career-low 16. Manning, by the way, also has 11 in 11 games.

Does that mean that the Jaguars shouldn’t take a serious look at making Manning their starting quarterback in 2018? Absolutely not. His experience, ability to carry a team for several weeks and clutch performances in the playoffs (remember the two game-winning drives in the Super Bowl) should make Coughlin, GM Dave Caldwell and coach Doug Marrone look long and hard at Manning.
If Eli Manning moves on from the Giants, might a reunion with Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville be an option? Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports
That, of course, depends on the team making the decision to move on from Bortles. That’s certainly not as easy a decision as many outside the organization believe. Caldwell is a staunch Bortles supporter and Coughlin and Marrone believe that they can win with Bortles, provided he’s given a good supporting cast, which injuries have robbed him of this season. It’s not out of the question that Bortles is the starter in 2018.

But if he isn’t, the Jaguars will have multiple options. Kirk Cousins, provided Washington doesn’t franchise tag him again, is the top quarterback available. It doesn’t appear that Jimmy Garoppolo will be available (San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that it was likely the 49ers would use the franchise tag on him). Alex Smith could be if Kansas City decides to go with Patrick Mahomes after Smith’s dip in play over the past month.

A veteran quarterback makes more sense for the Jaguars right now. The defense is Super Bowl caliber, but there’s a small window to keep that defense together considering the age and contract situations of some of the key players. Drew Brees, Sam Bradford, Case Keenum and Teddy Bridgewater also are scheduled to be free agents.

Manning, provided he has been released or is willing to accept a trade, should be considered. Even at 37 years old his upside outweighs his turnover concerns and would give the Jaguars a chance at a deep playoff run.

Wholesale Throwback MLB Kansas City Royals Jerseys China 2018

With a clear hole at first base this offseason, the Boston Red Sox are considering several of the top available options at the position.

Rumor CentralThe Red Sox met with the representatives for free agent Logan Morrison on Monday, Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston reports. Also on Boston’s radar is Carlos Santana, whose agents will meet with the team during the GM meetings this week, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe tweets.

Boston president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski labeled the meetings with Santana and Morrison as “more information [than anything] so far at this time,” ESPN’s Scott Lauber notes.

Santana and Morrison rank fifth and 11th, respectively, in the Top 50 free agents of ESPN’s Keith Law. Between them is former Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer (seventh), whom the Red Sox have also been linked to.

Santana, who has spent all eight of his major league seasons with the Cleveland Indians, slashed .259/.363/.455 with 23 home runs and 79 RBIs this year. The 31-year-old switch-hitter is known for his patience, leading the league in walks with 113 in 2014. The Indians extended a qualifying offer Santana’s way, so signing him will result in the forfeiting of a draft pick.

Morrison is coming off a career year with the Tampa Bay Rays, in which he hit .246 with 38 home runs and 85 RBIs. The 30-year-old also set career highs in walks and OBP.

Boston is one of several teams to also check in on fellow free-agent first baseman Lucas Duda, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.

The Red Sox need a first baseman, with Mitch Moreland hitting the open market this winter. Boston’s first basemen posted a .749 OPS last season — the third-lowest mark in the majors. As a team, the Red Sox hit the fewest home runs in the American League (168).

Cheap High Quality Kyrie Irving Basketball Celtics White Jerseys China

BOSTON — Celtics guard Kyrie Irving sat out of Boston’s 95-94 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday after suffering a minor facial fracture below his right eye in Friday’s win over the Charlotte Hornets.

Celtics coach Brad Stevens said Irving was visiting with a face specialist Sunday and was expected to be fitted for a protective mask so that he can return to game action.

“The good news is, thus far, [the facial fracture is] the only point of pain in his face or head or neck or anything else,” Stevens said. “He hasn’t been diagnosed with a concussion. We’ll see how the doctor visit goes today and how everything else goes. We’ll keep monitoring for symptoms of that. We’re hopeful to have him back sooner rather than later.”

Al Horford, who has been dealing with concussion symptoms, is in the starting lineup. He missed the past two games.

Celtics big man Aron Baynes hit Irving while trying to defend a Kemba Walker shot attempt in the first quarter of Friday’s game. After fouling Walker on a drive, Baynes spun to box out, and his right elbow smashed Irving, who immediately collapsed to the floor clutching his face.

Irving was attended to by Celtics trainer Art Horne and left the court clutching a towel over his bloodied face.

Boston already was playing without Gordon Hayward (ankle) and Horford. Irving included, that’s $76.2 million worth of unavailable talent.

Even without their stars, the Celtics won their 11th straight game while rallying from 18 down to top Charlotte. Backup point guard Shane Larkin, who could see an increased role if Irving is out Sunday, scored a team-high 16 points in Friday’s win.

Authentic Good Quality Football Jimmy Garoppolo 49ers Jerseys Wholesale

Kyle Shanahan said last week that Jimmy Garoppolo might not see the field all season.

One week later, the 49ers coach has changed his tune on the team’s recently acquired quarterback.

While announcing to Giants reporters on a conference call that C.J. Beathard would start against New York on Sunday, Shanahan revealed Wednesday that Garoppolo is much further along this week.

Earlier in the day, the coach acknowledged that he hoped to see the former Patriots backup “sooner rather than later,” per Joe Fann of the team’s official website.

The winless Niners shipped a second-round pick to New England last Monday to land Garoppolo, whose contract expires after the season. Whether San Francisco plans to franchise tag or re-sign the young passer, it’s imperative the team gets a close look at him.

With their bye up next after New York, it makes sense to wait another week. The idea that the campaign would end without Garoppolo making starts, though, simply never checked out.

Perhaps the concern in San Francisco is a turnstile offensive line that leaves Niners signal-callers subject to ultra-violence on a weekly basis:

“I’m trying to learn this playbook as fast as possible,” Garoppolo said Wednesday of a complex, Shanahan-led scheme that would test any veteran out of the gate.

It’s no simple task stepping into a new offense post-Halloween, but these are unique times for the Niners after they pulled the trigger on a potential long-term solution under center. They must discover how Garoppolo performs — especially in circumstances less pristine than Foxborough.

Bad teams shove promising quarterbacks on the field all the time. Pulling Garoppolo west from New England brought waves of new hope to the Bay Area. It’s time to see what he can do.
